COMMISSION

Eric WH Chin welcomes commission of artworks. He understands commissioning an artwork is a deeply personal experience and will work with you to capture the likeness or emotions of the subject regardless of whether it’s a person, a group of people, pets or other subjects of your interests such as landscape and buildings.

How it Works:

1. Initial Consultation & Booking:

Once receiving your expression of interest in commissioning an artwork, Eric will have a private discussion with you to understand your vision, the context of the commission, the complexity of the artwork, framing requirement, delivery arrangement and the turnaround time you are seeking.

You will receive a quote and completion timeframe for the commission. A non-refundable 20% deposit is required to book and secure your spot before work begins.

2. Artwork Creation - Reference Photographs & Live Sittings

Eric creates artworks from a combination of photographs and studies/ sketches or works on the commissioned artwork directly in live sittings.

You are welcome to provide reference photographs of the subject, and if quality photographs are not available, Eric may request for additional photographs to be taken.

Depending on the scale and complexity of the commission, Eric may choose to create studies or sketches of the subject or to work directly on the commission in live sittings. Each sitting typically lasts for 3 hours and one or multiple sittings may be needed.

3. Artwork Completion & Refinement:

For oil painting, Eric works in the wet-in-wet method and therefore substantive changes to the artwork may be difficult once the paint starts drying out. When necessary, Eric will give you a chance to review the artwork before final changes are made.

Paintings in watercolour cannot be changed once it is done and therefore review and refinement are not possible.

4. Framing, Delivery or Collection:

Once the remaining 80% of the commission balance is settled, the artwork will be sent for framing and packaged for shipping or scheduled studio pickup. A certificate of authenticity will be provided to all commissioned artworks.

* Please note that the process of painting in oil and drying time may take several weeks to several months. Watercolour has a quicker turnaround time. Framing and delivery time may be beyond Eric’s control, please consider these factors and discuss with Eric to ensure the artworks can be completed within the timeframe you are seeking. 

Pricing Structure:

The baseline prices reflect a single subject (head and up to half body length, one person or one pet) with solid or abstract gradient backgrounds:

  • Professional-grade oils on stretched canvas, unframed: $20 per linear inch (i.e., width + height of the artwork). Minimum size is 12”×16”.
  • Professional-grade watercolours on 300 gsm cold-pressed paper, unframed: Minimum size in A4 is $300 and A3 is $400.

Extra subject & complex composition will incur additional costs:

  • Additional subject: Add 50% of baseline price for each additional subject.
  • More than half-body length or full body composition or with hand(s): Add 15% of baseline price for each subject
  • Complex background (e.g., detailed interior scene or specific landscape as background): Add 15% of baseline price.

* Please note that the minimum size will only fit up to three subjects.

Framing and postage/ delivery costs will be passed on to you. Eric will discuss with you the appropriate size and composition and provide you a quote after initial consultation.
