This painting captured the rugged coastline at The Crags, where wind‑carved rock formations meet the restless Southern Ocean. It was painted en plein air during my solo road trip through Central Australia to Northern Territory for 3 months in 2024.

The rocky outcrops rose in layered browns, ochres, and greys, their edges shaped by centuries of waves and weather. Below them, the sea churned in deep blues and turquoise, with white foam breaking sharply against the stone. A dynamic interplay of movement and solidity.

The sky was a soft pale blue which later turned into grey as the rain cloud closing in. The raw energy of the surf, the sculptural quality of the cliffs and the chilly wind swirled into the immediacy of of this painting captured directly from life.
